John Barry Music by Other Artists

Listed alphabetically. These albums feature music composed but not performed by Barry. I usually do not include albums which have one or two Barry standards on them (i.e. "Born Free" or Bond music); there are just too many. I have made a few exceptions for noteworthy items.

Like the Compilations section, I have added track listings to help determine whether a CD has music one may not have on another disc. Suites are made up of more than one piece of the score.

Who is this Nic Raine guy anyway? One of the most interesting trends in recent years has been the performances of otherwise unavailable film scores by various orchestras. There are others (Joel McNeely immediately comes to mind), but Nic Raine (and the City of Prauge Philharmonic) is the most prolific. Raine's credentials are rooted in having been Barry's orchestrator for many years, and he's intimately familiar with the John Barry sound.

It's interesting how controversial he is among Barry's devoted fans. He's frequently knocked for changing the original tempo, varying the orchestration, poor recording and any number of errors from the orchestra itself. Personally, I've never had much trouble with it. It is true that if you sit with your ears 2-inches away from the speaker and play the original soundtracks (OST) until the laser burns a hole through them, you get so used to the original that any variation from it is blasphemy. But I have no problem with the recording quality and I don't hear the musical faults. And I love the fact that Raine is making available a lot of music (e.g. Raise the Titanic that would otherwise be available only while watching the movie itself.

Performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic, conducted by Nic Raine.
More Bond music performed by Raine and the Philharmonic. As with the first CD, a lot of this is available on the original soundtracks (OST), but some of it is otherwise unavailable on CD. This CD suffers in comparison with the Volume 1 largely because the music in the later Bond movies just isn't as good. Music not composed by Barry is credited in brackets [].

An boxed anthology of pieces that have appeared on other Silva releases. I don't own this yet so I haven't checked, but I believe that there's nothing new here if you already own the other Silva CDs. Not to be confused with the 4-CD boxed set from FAT records that came out a few years back.

Rock & Roll Forever / Now Playing (1997)
Performed by The Ventures

The Ventures's surf rock sound lends itself well to some things and less to others. This album has two Bond themes—a very bluesey "The Man with the Golden Gun" and a rather pale "Live & Let Die."
