Scanned because I've seen it 1,000 times over the years. It first appeared in a printed edition of Pilgrim's Progress in 1686, and the illustration was a woodcut. This photographic version was a Calotype, and appeared in Harper's Monthly through the end of the 19th century.
Seriously, if you browse many photo magazines from the last 30 years or so of the 20thcentury, you've likely seen this 1/3rd-page strip ad at least a hundred times.
