This is Canon's EOS equivalent of their T60, a bottom-tier, auto-only camera meant for markets other than Japan and the USA; I picked it up mainly for that reason—it's rare here.
This was the EOS 888 in Asia. In Europe it's the EOS 5000. The four-digit European number fits Canon's numbering scheme, since this would be the bottom of the line. I'd also argue that it's likely the basis for what became the Rebel line in the USA, but I don't know that for a fact.
